Welcome to second grade! This is an exciting year in music because students know what to expect when learning in a group and are much more comfortable creating in a shared space. Second graders are more proficient at understanding instructions and are able to work in small groups and by themselves. They are learning to be thoughtful about classroom discussions and listening. Music is so dependent on good listening skills!
On this page, you will be able to see what is going on in second grade music class with Ms. Crockett throughout the school year. I will display songs and games we are learning, new musical concepts, pictures of classroom activities, and videos of performances.
Beginning in September, second graders will do a lot of reviewing rhythm symbols learned in first grade, as well as pitch concepts through singing and playing instruments. We will learn to feel comfortable with our new friends in class by playing singing games and movement games. As the months progress, we will learn to sing new pitches, sing in two parts through canons, create and improvise our own music, read and write rhythms and melodies, learn to play different types of accompaniments on the barred instruments, learn some fun folk dances, and learn about form and meter in music.
Stay tuned!
